$100,000 in remuneration paid to Blind River council, appointees

Blind River paid out $106,166.12 in remuneration last year for work done by council and appointees to various boards.

Sue Dent, treasurer and director of finance, on Monday provided council with a remuneration statement for 2023 as required by the Municipal Act.

Remuneration includes honorariums, car allowances, and the employer portion of benefits (CPP, EHT, WSIB, as applicable).

It also includes travel expenses which are payments to reimburse individuals for mileage, meals, etc. incurred. This also includes amounts paid on behalf of these individuals for conference registrations, etc. as approved by Council.

The statement could also include board honorariums for travel and other related reimbursements.

A breakdown of what councillors received shows that Mayor Sally Hagman received $14,585.82 for her municipal honorarium. She also received $1,380 for municipal expenses, $690.46 in municipal benefits, $3,756.05 for municipal travel, $1,200 as a representative on the North Shore Power Group (NSPG) board, $5,612.28 from her appointment on the Algoma District Services Administration Board (ADSAB) and $3,665.80 as a member of Algoma Public Health for a total of $30,890.41.

Deputy Mayor Paula Summers received a municipal remuneration of $9,062.10, municipal expenses $1,035, municipal benefits of $611.62, $4,170.59 for municipal travel, a NSPG honorarium of $1,200 and $500 for her appointment to the police services board (PSB) for a total of $16,579.31.

Coun. Betty Ann Dunbar received a municipal honorarium pf $9,062.10 along with municipal expenses of $1,035, municipal benefits of $589.47, municipal travel of $994.03 for a total of $11,680.60.

Coun. Jim Dunbar received the councillor municipal honorarium of $9,062.10, municipal expenses $1,035, benefits of $589.47 and travel expenses of $589.47 amounting to a total of $11,521.74.

Coun. Jennifer Posteraro received the $9,062.10 councillor honorarium, municipal expenses of $1,035, municipal benefits of $589.47, travel of $1,110.97 and a NSPG honorarium of $1,200 for a total of $12,997.54.

Coun. Joseph Connell, who resigned from council over health issues, received a lower municipal honorarium of $6,031.50, municipal expenses of $690, and benefits of $131.10 for a total of $6,852.60.

Coun. Daniel Middaugh received the regular councillor honorarium of $9,062.10, municipal expenses of $1,035, benefits of $589.48 for a total of $10,686.58.

Coun. Katie Whitlock who was appointed late in the year received a councillor honorarium of $1,515.30, municipal expenses of $172.50, benefits of $351.64 for a total of $2,039.44.

Ken Kennedy, an appointee to the PSB received an honorarium of $500 and benefits of $17.90 for a total of $517.90.

NSPG appointees Chris Astles and Graeme Lowry both received $1,200 honorariums.
