Province confirms 1,242 new cases of COVID-19 today

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,242 new cases of COVID-19 today.

This is the fourth consecutive day the province has reported more than 1,000 new cases, and the third-highest daily case count ever reported. 

The province has also confirmed 12 COVID-related deaths today, including two people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 10 people over the age of 80. 

Since yesterday's provincial update, there have been 38 people hospitalized with the coronavirus and four COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

Public Health Ontario has reported 821 new recoveries today. 

Of the 1,242 new cases included in the latest epidemiological summary, 74 cases are from Ottawa, 279 are from Peel, 107 are from York Region, and 483 are from Toronto. 

There are 79 new school-related cases in today's update, including 39 student cases, 13 staff cases, and 27 unidentified cases. There have been 906 school-related cases reported in Ontario over the last 14 days, and 2,707 school-related cases reported to date. 

There are 9,514 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province currently. Of those cases, at least 367 COVID patients are hospitalized with 84 COVID patients in intensive care units and 54 COVID patients on ventilators in Ontario.

The province has reported 28,410 tests processed since yesterday's report, with 26,646 COVID-19 test swabs awaiting processing. The province's public health lab system has completed 5.4 million COVID tests to date. Approximately 3.5 to 4 per cent of the people tested for COVID-19 test positive base on case rate information collected last week. 

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 85,395 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and has reported 72,636 of those cases as recovered. The province has also reported 3,245 people who have contracted COVID-19 have died as a result. 

The average incidence rate in Ontario was 47.8 cases per 100,000 people last week (Oct. 30 to Nov. 5), which is an increase of 11 per cent compared to the previous week. The cumulative incidence rate is 574.5 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. 

There has been a spike in the number of cases in Northern Ontario.

So far this month, 84 new cases have been reported by northern health units. In October, 79 cases were confirmed.

There are 83 known active cases of the virus in Northern Ontario. 

The breakdown for the health units, at the time of today’s provincial update, is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 53 cases, rate of 46.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 55 cases. There are 12 known active cases. The last cases were reported Nov. 8.

  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 48 cases, rate of 37 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 50 cases. There are three known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 9.

  • Porcupine Health Unit: 100, rate of 119.8 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 101 cases. There are four known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 9.

  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 174 cases, rate of 87.4 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 175 cases. There are 48 known active cases. The last cases were reported Nov. 8.

  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 17 cases, rate of 52 per 100,000. There are no known active cases. The last case was reported Oct. 5.

  • Northwestern Health Unit: 78 cases, rate of 89 per 100,000. The health unit has also reported two probable cases. There are four known active cases. 

  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 130 cases, rate of 86.7 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 129 cases. There are 12 known active cases. 

The Ontario rate of infection is 574.5.
