With schools closed now for over a month, staff from Elliot Lake’s Our Lady of Lourdes French Immersion Catholic School are planning a vehicle parade to celebrate Catholic Education Week.

The parade will take place on Monday, May 4 at 11 a.m. and will start from Centennial arena, according to Lourdes vice principal Nadia Zanatta. It will be an opportunity for students, staff and parents see each other after an extended absence due to COVID-19 and social distancing measures.

“We wanted to show our school spirit and let our families know we miss them and we are thinking of them,” Zanatta told Elliot Lake Today in an email.  “We are encouraging everyone to wear school spirit wear.”

The parade has been approved by OPP, the city of Elliot Lake and Algoma Public Health with families remaining at their homes along the parade route or as close as possible to it and practicing social distancing. Vehicles in the parade can only contain household members. The OPP will not be an official part of the motorized parade.

With the start at the arena parking lot, the parade will continue along Spruce, Beach, Hillside, Mississauga, Axmith, Mississauga, Pearson and Esten South.

“Following the parade, a group of staff will be making some special deliveries to our current families - as well as our new Kindergarten families for next year of school swag to keep them in high spirits,” Zanatta added.
