Ontario sets new record with 1,132 new COVID cases in the province

Public Health Ontario is reporting a record number of new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours in the province.

According to the agency, there are 1,132 confirmed, new cases of COVID-19 today; it's the first time that number has ever risen above 1,100 since the pandemic began.

Yesterday, 1,003 new cases were reported, meaning today's numbers mark an almost 13% increase in cases since yesterday.

There were also 11 new deaths linked to COVID-19 reported today; six were residents of long term care homes.

Of the 1,132 new cases being reported, more than half are from Toronto and the GTA. Toronto Public Health reported 336 of today's cases, while Peel Public Health reported 258 new cases. York Region reported 114 of the new cases in today's update, There are also 78 new cases in Ottawa, 64 in Halton and 55 in Hamilton. 

Since Nov. 1, the province has confirmed 7,085 new cases of COVID-19, 6,221 recoveries and 84 deaths. 

The province reported 39,165 COVID tests have been processed since yesterday's report, which is almost 2,000 fewer than Thursday.

In November, health labs have processed almost 244,000 COVID-19 tests. The per cent of people who tested positive for COVID-19 has ranged between three and four per cent since Nov. 1.

There are currently 8,398 active, lab-confirmed cases in Ontario. Of those cases, 384 people are hospitalized. There are 88 COVID patients in intensive care units and 52 COVID patients on ventilators in hospitals across Ontario. 

Since the pandemic began, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 82,825 cases. Of those cases, 70,938 are reported recovered (85 per cent) and 3,220 people have died (4 per cent).
