Ontario reports 1,848 new COVID cases today

The province has reported 45 deaths since yesterday and 203 new hospitalizations since Wednesday

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,848 new cases of COVID-19 today (Dec. 11).

Since Wednesday's report (Dec. 9), 203 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and 44 people with COVID-19 have been admitted to intensive care units. Due to technical issues, the province did not report new hospitalizations yesterday, so today's report includes totals for both days. 

The latest update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following: 

  • 45 deaths reported, including one person between 40 and 59 years old, seven people between 60 and 79 years old, and 37 people over the age of 80. Of the deaths reported today, 29 were residents of long-term care homes.
  • 1,753 new recoveries 
  • 151 new school-related cases
  • 11 schools in the province are currently closed because of COVID-19 cases and 878 Ontario schools have one or more confirmed case of COVID-19 reported
  • Of the 1,848 cases reported today, 386 are from Peel, 469 are from Toronto, and 205 are from York Region
  • 16,283 current active cases in Ontario
  • Record 63,051 tests complete since last report, producing a 3.2 per cent positivity rate (the lowest since Nov. 1)
  • 808 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 829 yesterday
  • There are 235 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 228 yesterday) and 124 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 132 yesterday)

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 136,631 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 116,432 of those recovered and 3,916 deaths. 

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 919.2 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 86.5 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 1 to Dec. 7. 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data for the rate of cases for the health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 61 cases, rate of 53.3 per 100,000 people. There is one known active case. The last case was reported Dec. 2.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 90 cases, rate of  69.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 91 cases. There are six known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 9.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 116, rate of 139 per 100,000 people. The health unit has also reported a probable case. There are four known active cases. The last confirmed case was reported Dec. 4. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 239 cases, rate of 120.1 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 242 cases. There are eight known active cases. The last case was reported Dec. 10.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 25 cases, rate of 76.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 26 cases. There are seven known active cases. The last case was reported Dec. 10.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 134 cases, rate of 152.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has also reported two probable cases. There are 10 known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 10.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 408 cases, rate of 272.1 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 409 cases. There are 119 known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 10.
