Ontario confirms 1,873 new cases today, record number of tests processed

The province has also reported 17 deaths and 59 new hospitalizations

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,873 new cases of COVID-19 today (Dec. 12).

The province also reported a record number of tests processed with 65,260 tests processed by public health labs in 24 hours. The tests produced a 3.2 per cent positivity rate, which is even with yesterday's rate, and the lowest since Nov. 1.

Since yesterday's report, 59 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and 11 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

The latest update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following: 

  • 17 deaths reported, including six people between 60 and 79 years old, and 11 people over the age of 80. Of the deaths reported today, nine were residents of long-term care homes.
  • 1,918 new recoveries 
  • 855 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 808 yesterday
  • There are 237 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 235 yesterday) and 143 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 124 yesterday)
  • Of the 1,873 cases reported today, 436 are from Peel, 522 are from Toronto, 185 are from York Region, and 31 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • 16,221 current active cases in Ontario, down from 16,283 yesterday
  • There is a backlog of 67,654 tests awaiting processing

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 138,504 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 118,350 of those recovered and 3,933 deaths. 

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 931.8 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 86.5 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 2 to Dec. 8. 

Yesterday the provincial government announced some health units will shift within the colour-coded COVID-19 Response Framework. 

Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and York Region will enter the grey lockdown restrictions. Middlesex-London, Simcoe-Muskoka, and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph will be under red zone restrictions. All changes take effect Monday at 12:01 a.m.
