On Sunday, Ontario had its highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases with 1,328 new cases, 434 of which were in Toronto.

On Saturday, there were 1,132 new cases which also set a single-day increase record.

100 patients sick with COVID-19 were in intensive care units in Ontario on Friday night, the highest since June.

In light of the soaring numbers, Elliot Lake Family Health Team member Dr. Cathy Groh took to social media Saturday to issue another warning to Elliot Lake and area residents aimed at stopping the spread.

"Fortunately Algoma has a very low number of active cases, so the risk is low in our community. However, people travelling in and out of Elliot Lake could easily bring the virus here," Dr. Groh wrote.

"Public Health reminds us to avoid the 3Cs: closed spaces with poor ventilation, crowded places where many people gather and close contact situations. These are places where we are more likely to contract COVID-19," Dr. Groh added.

One observer wanted to know why schools remain open in light of the current COVID-19 caseload.

"One of the goals of stopping the spread of COVID -19 is to be able to keep the schools open," Dr. Groh replied.

"Schools have put in place many precautions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. A priority for our society is to keep schools open. We can see this in parts of Europe that have had to go into a second lockdown but still kept schools open."

Dr. Groh focused on the regional picture in another post.

"There has been a big increase in new cases of COVID-19 in Sudbury since halloween. People travel back and forth between Elliot Lake and Sudbury every day. We need to be vigilant," Dr. Groh wrote.

"If you have symptoms of COVID-19, stay home, self isolate and get tested. Call the COVID Assessment Centre at 705-461-8882 to arrange a test," Dr. Groh added.

She concluded, "We can continue to protect ourselves and our community from an outbreak of COVID-19."
