Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, all Elliot Lake Lions Club activities have had to be cancelled. Club representative Robert Kerr says it has led to a different fundraising approach.

"The club is trying a new initiative to raise funds so we can continue with our community service and stay true to our motto of 'We Serve',” he said.

"The Elliot Lake Lions are introducing a gift card fundraising program called FundScrip. Most of us buy groceries, gas, household items, eat in restaurants, go to the movies, or need gifts for holidays, birthdays and special events," he explained. "You can use FundScrip to raise money for the Elliot Lake Lions Club by buying gift cards for everyday purchases from a wide array of retail categories such as groceries, gas, home improvement, department stores, restaurants, coffee shops, clothing stores and many more.

"The gift cards themselves come from some of Canada’s largest retailers. They are sold and spent at face value but earn a percentage that is donated to the Elliot Lake Lions. Use the cards to pay for your purchases instead of using cash, debit, or credit cards.

"A list of over 180 participating retailers, many that are local, is on an order form," Kerr said. "Buying your gift cards through the Lions Club is a win-win situation. At no additional cost, you get the gift cards you need, and you help raise funds for the Elliot Lake Lions Club local projects and you can continue to collect points (e.g. Air Miles, Optimum, etc.)"

The next order for cards will be submitted on Monday, Oct. 5. Beginning in November, orders will be submitted the first business day of each month and the Lions are looking at twice a month in November and December depending on the response. Download the order form here.

Funds can be e-transferred at [email protected] and the order can be written in the message box.

Purchasers with cash or cheque can contact two Lions Club members. Lion Robert Kerr is available at [email protected] or 705-971-1802 and Lion Roger Collett is available at [email protected] or 705-261-1353.
