Elliot lake marks Pride Month with flag presentation (3 photos)

Pride Community member says bigger celebration being planned for July

The Elliot Lake and area Pride Community teamed up with the local OPP to make a brief celebration of Pride Month outside Elliot Lake City Hall Wednesday.

It was a downsized celebration normally held in the city with Pride members teaming up with OPP officers Constable Phil Young from the local OPP detachment and Const. Bev Gauthier from the Blind River headquarters to present police with a Pride flag.

COVID-19 restrictions have forced the Pride Community to downsize bright and colourful celebrations hosted in previous years in the city.

Member Douglas Elliott said the group is planning on a bigger celebration in July as virus restrictions are lifted, but no firm plans have been finalized.

Constable Young said Wednesday’s ceremony was part of the 'Pride Challenge' issued by the OPP to all its detachments. He received a Pride flag to hang at the local detachment from Elliott’s spouse Greg Lawrence.

More details on celebrations in the summer will be released once finalized.
