COVID-19 cases confirmed at St. Francis and R.L Beattie schools in Sudbury

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board has dismissed one class at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School after an individual tested positive for COVID-19 at the school.

A letter to parents dated March 8 states that the individual is currently self-isolating and being monitored by Public Health Sudbury & Districts while the investigation continues. The Grade 5/6 Regular English class at St. Francis is dismissed up until and including March 19.

The board is advising parents that children in this class must self-isolate and receive a COVID-19 test. 

One case of COVID-19 has also been confirmed at R.L. Beattie Public School. The kindergarten class in Room 122 has been asked to self-isolate to and including March 18.

In what it said was an abundance of caution, the school had dismissed the class on March 7, while a test result was still pending.

The individual who tested positive is currently self-isolating and being monitored by Public Health Sudbury and Districts.

In a letter posted on its website on March 9, the Rainbow District School Board noted that there is no evidence of transmission of the virus at the school at this time.

The Rainbow District School is also reporting today that some bus students are to self-isolate.

Princess Anne students on the morning elementary run of bus Route L116 and the afternoon elementary run of bus Route L610 are required to self-isolate to and including March 19. The school remains open for in-person learning.

Sudbury Secondary students on the morning secondary run of bus Route N508 and the afternoon secondary run of bus Route N517 are required to self-isolate to and including March 18. There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Sudbury Secondary School at this time.

The affected students, their parents/guardians and relevant bus drivers on all these routes have been notified and will receive a letter from Public Health with specific guidance.

According to the four school board websites, as of March 9 at 10 a.m., there were 45 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 18 of our area schools. Nine of those schools are currently closed. Seven schools are currently listed as active outbreaks by Public Health Sudbury and Districts. There are 117 schools located in our region, which includes Sudbury, Espanola, Manitoulin.
