Forced by COVID-19 protocols, organizers of several annual programs have had to change their operational plans this year in Elliot Lake and many other communities.

Organizers of the 30th annual Elliot Lake Firefighter's Food Drive have announced their effort will be different this year.

It will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5, but without any door-to-door food donation pickups as in other years.

There also won't be any food donations accepted at the Elliot Lake Fire Hall on Hillside North.

Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank President Len Kutchaw said instead the public is being asked to make a cash donation Dec. 5 outside the fire hall and at various locations around Elliot Lake. Those donations will be accepted in a physical distancing manner.

“This year has been tough on everyone," Kutchaw said. "The Food Bank appreciates the on-going support of the public and the Elliot Lake Fire Department, but we also realize that a door-to-door campaign this year just isn’t a responsible thing to do."

"We are thankful that the Fire Department has come up with an alternative for this year’s food drive," he concluded. "Hopefully, despite the change in format, the public will respond as generously as they have in the past."

More details will be made available closer to the date. Meanwhile, donations to the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank can be made Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Charles Walk. Call the Food Bank for more information at 705-461-3663.
