243 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Ontario today

Public Health Ontario is reporting 243 new cases of COVID-19 today, which is a 0.8 increase in overall cases reported in the province to-date. 

The daily update also notes there have been 240 new recoveries and 24 more deaths attributed to the coronavirus. 

The deaths reported today include six people between the ages of 60 and 79 and 18 people over the age of 80. 

There are now 603 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, including 118 patients in intensive care and 81 patients on ventilators.  

Public Health Ontario has confirmed there were 15,357 tests processed since yesterday’s report. 

In Ontario, there have been 30,860 confirmed cases of COVID-19, of those 24,492 are reported recovered (79.4 per cent) and 2,450 people have died (7.9 per cent). 

The incidence rate average for the province of Ontario is 207.6 cases per 100,000 people in the population. More than 67 per cent of the cases reported in Ontario have been from the GTA public health units. 

The Ministry of Long-Term Care has reported there are now 78 current outbreaks at long-term care homes in Ontario with 884 active cases of COVID-19 in residents and 665 active cases in staff. The ministry has reported 1,720 deaths of residents (Public Health has only reported 1,575 so far), and seven deaths of staff members (Public Health has only reported five). 

Public Health Ontario is also reporting 36 active outbreaks in retirement home and seven active outbreaks in hospitals. 

There are nine known active cases of the virus in Northern Ontario.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

Today's provincial report includes data from Jan. 15 to June 7 and includes the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population. Data included on resolved cases and last known confirmed is from each health unit's respective website. The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 21 cases, rate of 18.4 per 100,000 population. The last positive test was confirmed May 23. All of the known cases are resolved.

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 27 cases, rate of 20.8 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 29 cases. Of those, 27 are resolved and there has been one virus-related death. There is one known active case, a woman aged 60 to 79 who is in hospital.

• Porcupine Health Unit - 65, rate of 77.9 per 100,000 population. The last confirmed case was May 10. Of the confirmed cases, 57 are resolved and seven people have died. There is still one known active case of the virus.

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 64 cases, rate of 32.2 per 100,000 population. The last positive test was reported May 14. Two people have died, and the rest of the known cases are resolved.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 83 cases, rate of 55.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has 85 cases listed. Of those, 80 are resolved and one person has died. There are four known active cases, two which are hospitalized.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 25 cases, rate of 28.5  per 100,000 population. Of the positive tests, 22 cases are resolved. There are three active cases.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 207.6.
