A long time First Nation chief has become the fourth federal candidate running in the Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing ridding.

Two days after his leader Justin Trudeau called a snap federal election for Sept. 20, the long-standing chief of Wiikwemkoong, Duke Peltier, has announced he's taking a leave of absence to run as the Liberal Party candidate in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing.

After 15 years as chief, he'll seek the seat occupied by incumbent New Democrat Carol Hughes who has held the riding for four terms.

Wiikwemkoong Councillor Tim Ominika will serve as acting chief through Sept. 27.

Besides Hughes and Peltier, Conservative John Sagman, and the Green Party's Stephen Zimmermann are the candidates for the riding in next month's election.
