Ontario reporting 421 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today

Northeastern Ontario's case rate based on population is lower than the provincial average

Ontario is reporting another six per cent increase in lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, or 421 more cases, since yesterday.

Over the last seven days, the daily reports have ranged from six to 11.6 per cent increase in cases.

The death toll in Ontario is approaching the 300 mark with another 17 deaths reported by the province and linked to COVID-19 today bringing the total to 291.

The total number of confirmed cases in Ontario is 7,470, which includes the 291 deaths, 3,357 recoveries, and 760 patients hospitalized. There are 203 patients in Ontario currently on ventilators.

Ontario is reporting 108,230 people have been tested for the virus and there are 1,534 tests still awaiting results.

There are now 89 outbreaks reported in long-term care homes, and 24 outbreaks confirmed at Ontario hospitals. There are 741 cases reported in patients at long-term care homes, and 56 in patients at hospitals. There are 430 COVID-19 cases confirmed in long-term care staff, and 43 confirmed in hospital staff.

According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to April 12, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:

  • Algoma Public Health - 10 cases, rate of 8.7 per 100,000 population
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - nine cases, rate of 6.9 per 100,000 population
  • Porcupine Health Unit - 39, rate of 46.7 per 100,000 population
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 34 cases, rate of 17.1 per 100,000 population
  • Timiskaming Health Unit - seven cases, rate of 21.4 per 100,000
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 27 cases, rate of 16 per 100,000 population
  • Northwestern Health Unit - nine cases, rate of 10.3 per 100,000 population

In Northeastern Ontario, there are currently 99 confirmed cases, and the rate is 17.7 per 100,000 population. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 50.3.
