Two males stopped for speeding

On Dec. 9, 2017, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment were on patrol duties on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River. 

Shortly before 10 p.m., police observed an eastbound vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Causley Street and a traffic stop was initiated. The driver who could not produce a driver's licence and a query revealed the male driver's licence status was suspended. A query on a male passenger in the vehicle found him to be bound by a recognizance with a curfew condition.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for 45 days.

As a result of the investigation, the passenger David Blair, 24 years of age from Sudbury, Ont., was charged with: fail to comply with recognizance, contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Feb. 1, 2018.

The driver Derrick Handrahan, 40 years of age form Nickel Centre, Ont. was charged with:

  • Driving while disqualified, contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code.
  • Driving while suspended (X2) contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and with
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Jan. 31, 2018 for the HTA offences and on Feb. 1, 2018 for the criminal offence.
