Two facing theft charges after lumber reported stolen

On Oct. 20, 2020, at approximately 5:44 a.m. members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft of lumber complaint on West Branch Road, Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

Police learned that two people were seen at the property on West Branch Road, one with a motor vehicle and the other with an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) whose attached trailer was loaded with lumber.

Police searched for and found the motor vehicle in question parked off West Branch Road with the occupants inside.  The ATV and trailer were also found in the area and were confirmed as stolen.

As a result of the investigation, Andre Lafontaine, 37 years old, of Sudbury, was arrested and charged with:  

  • Theft under $5,000 contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code(CC); and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime contrary to section 354(1) of the CC.

Christine Lamirande, 36 years old, of Markstay-Warren was also arrested and charged with:

  • Theft under $5,000 contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code(CC); and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime contrary to section 354(1) of the CC.

Both accused were released on an undertaking and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Dec. 14, 2020, in Espanola.
