Two face trafficking, weapons charges in Espanola

ESPANOLA - On Monday, April 29, 2019, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) with the assistance of the Manitoulin OPP detachment and officers from the United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin (UCCM) Anishnaabe Police, executed a warrant in the Town of Espanola, Ont.

Officers seized a quantity of drugs suspected to be methamphetamine as well as an unauthorized weapon suspected to be pepper spray. The estimated value of the drugs is approximately $1,200.

As a result of the investigation, Vanessa Shears, 32 years of age; and Alain Galarneau, 34 years of age - both from Espanola, Ont. have been charged with:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - other drugs, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA); and
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon, contrary to section 91(2) of the Criminal Code (CC).

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on June 3, 2019.
