Two charged with vehicle theft after fleeing police near Espanola

BALDWIN TOWNSHIP - On Feb. 9, 2020 at approximately 1:55 a.m., a single motor vehicle was observed speeding on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township. The vehicle did not stop when signalled to by a member of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The vehicle and persons involved were later located in Lorne Township with the assistance of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and OPP Canine Unit.

As a result of the investigation, Travis Robinson, 29 years old of Barrie, Ont. has been charged with:
    •    Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle - contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC);
    •    Fail to comply with probation order - contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC;
    •    Flight from peace officer - contrary to section 320.17 of the CC;
    •    Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC;
    •    Theft of motor vehicle - contrary to section 333.1 of the CC.

Cody Verechaka, 27 years old of Midland, Ont. has been charged with:
    •    Theft of motor vehicle - contrary to section 333.1 of the CC;
    •    Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC;
    •    Fail to comply with probation order - contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC.

The accused are both scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 4, 2020 in Espanola.
