Two charged in grocery store theft investigation

On May 31, 2018, at 1:55 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested two people in regards to a theft occurrence at a local grocery store in the City of Elliot Lake, Ont.

The complainant reported a male and a female taking numerous grocery items on May 15, 2018. After viewing the store video surveillance, it showed the man and woman putting food merchandise items down the front of their pants. The two then departed without paying for the items.

After police investigation, the two parties were identified and charged accordingly.

Dwayne Newton, 49 years of age from Elliot Lake, Ont. was charged with:
    •    Theft Under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)

Diana Riess, 40 years of age from Elliot Lake, Ont. was charged with:
    •    Theft Under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the CC

Both accused persons are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake, Ont. on July 3, 2018.
