Two charged following traffic stop in Blind River

BLIND RIVER - On Oct. 16, 2021, East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members were on patrol on Highway 17 west of Blind River.

Police observed a minivan travelling eastbound and recognized the unlicensed driver. A subsequent traffic stop was conducted and the driver was in fact suspended. In addition, there was a passenger in the vehicle that the driver was on conditions not to be in the company of. As a result, both were arrested and charged.

Steve Verrette, 36 years old from Elliot Lake, was charged with:
    •    operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    fail to comply with undertaking (three counts), contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the CC
    •    driving while under suspension (two counts), contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)

The accused is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Nov. 4, 2021.

Nadia Southwind, 24 years old from the North Shore Township, was charged with:
    •    failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC

The accused was scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on Oct. 17, 2021.
