Traffic stop leads to multiple charges

ESPANOLA - On Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at approximately 7:04 p.m., officers from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a traffic complaint on Highway 17 in Webbwood, Ont.

Police located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. After conducting the stop, officers determined that the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages. 

As a result of the investigation, Chad Bowerman, age 39, of Sudbury, Ont., has been charged with:

  • Failing or refusing to provide a breath sample contrary to section 254 of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA);
  • Driving a motor vehicle with unsealed container of liquor contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA);
  • Permit use of plate not in accordance with act contrary to section 12 (1)(f) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and with
  • No muffler - motor vehicle, contrary to section 75(1) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Provincial Court of Justice in Espanola, Ont., on Apr. 5, 2018.
