Traffic stop leads to multiple charges

A traffic stop for a speeding violation led to a pair of charges for an Elliot Lake man, including speeding and a cannabis-related charge

GREATER SUDBURY - On Jan. 6, 2019 at approximately 2:48 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Incident Management Efficiency (TIME) team members conducted a traffic stop for a speeding violation on Highway 17 in Greater Sudbury, Ontario.

During the traffic stop police determined that cannabis was readily available to the driver.

As a result of the investigation, Kyle Sauro, 22 years of age, from Elliott Lake, Ont. was charged with Speeding contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act and Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act (CCA).

The OPP is committed to road safety for all Ontarians and is enforcing the new laws and rules around cannabis which are a combination of federal and provincial cannabis legislation.

It is an offence to drive or have the care or control of a vehicle or boat, whether or not it is in motion, while any cannabis is contained in the vehicle or boat. Exceptions are outlined here.
