Traffic stop leads to impaired driving charge

BILLINGS TOWNSHIP - On Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018 at approximately 10:13 p.m., an officer from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 540 in Billings Township, Ont.

The officer observed a violation and conducted a traffic stop. An investigation revealed that the driver had (allegedly) been consuming alcoholic beverages.

As a result, Richard St. Jean, age 27, of Whitefish, Ont. has been charged with:
    •    Driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay, Ont. on Sept. 26, 2018.

The OPP reminds motorists that there is no safe amount of drug or alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is urged to call police by dialling 9-1-1 immediately.
