Traffic stop leads to charges for Blind River man

Police stopped a vehicle with no rear lights on and discovered that the vehicle was not insured

On Nov. 26, 2017 at 1:49 a.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members were on regular patrol duties on Causley Street, in the Town of Blind River, Ont. 

Police observed an east bound vehicle operating with no rear lights on. A traffic stop was conducted and investigation revealed that the vehicle was not insured. Subsequently, the driver was charged and the vehicle was towed.

Eric Champagne, 27 years of age of Blind River, Ont. was charged with:

  • Operate motor vehicle on a highway - no insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA),
  • Possession of a schedule 1 substance - cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  • Driver fail to surrender license, contrary to section 33(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and
  • Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle, contrary to section 7(5)(a) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Feb. 1, 2018.
