46-year-old man went into medical distress after being apprehended at the scene of a break-enter and assault on Sunday

SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 46-year-old man yesterday in Elliot Lake.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 27, 2024, Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a residence in the area of Westhill Road and Axmith Avenue for a break and enter and assault call.
  • Inside the residence, officers located a person of interest. A struggle ensued as officers attempted to handcuff the man.
  • The man was eventually placed into the cruiser. 
  • Shortly after, while still at the residence, the man went into medical distress.
  • He was removed from the cruiser, and officers commenced first aid until paramedics arrived.
  • The man was pronounced deceased in hospital.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
