Snowmobile operator charged with impaired

On Dec. 26, 2017 at approximately 10:20 p.m., East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members were on general patrol duties on Esten Drive North and Pearson Drive in the City of Elliot Lake.

Police observed a snowmobile travelling at a high rate of speed on the roadway and fail to stop at a stop sign. A subsequent traffic stop was conducted. Upon speaking to the female driver, a strong odour of alcohol was detected emanating from her breath. As a result, the female was arrested and the snowmobile was towed and impounded.

Diana Riess, 40 years of age of Elliot Lake, Ont., was charged with:

  • Driving with more than 80 mgs. of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC), and
  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and
  • Disobey stop sign - fail to stop, contrary to section 136(1)(a) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Feb. 6, 2018.
