Rash of vehicle break-ins reported in Espanola

ESPANOLA - The Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating multiple thefts from vehicles in the Town of Espanola, Ont. The thefts occurred overnight between June 24 and June 26, 2019. 

The OPP have investigated a number of incidents where thieves have gone into unlocked vehicles and stealing articles such as: wallets, credit cards, cash, bank cards and other items. The suspects then attended businesses and made purchases with these stolen items. 

Thieves will often target easy to carry items so that it doesn't impede with their movement. All suspicious activity needs to be reported to police. Try to obtain as much information as possible while assuring your safety, and do not interfere with the crime scene. 

Vehicle owners can do simple things to decrease the risk of being victimized such as:

  • Never leave a vehicle running unattended
  • Lock your doors
  • Roll up your windows
  • Keep valuables out of sight
  • Pocket your keys
  • Always park in a well-lit area
