Police seize over $20K in drugs during Espanola search

Three charged after suspected fentanyl, crack cocaine, crystal meth seized

ESPANOLA – On Jan. 20, 2021 at approximately 8:40 p.m., members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) assisted the OPP's Manitoulin Crime Unit, the OPP's Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB), and the OPP's North East Community Street Crime Unit in the execution of a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant at a residence on Mead Boulevard in the Town of Espanola.  

A search of the residence, a vehicle and a backpack led to the seizure of over 28 grams of suspected white, off-white, yellow, green, red, purple, brown and blue fentanyl, over 30 grams of suspected cocaine, over 1 gram of suspected crack cocaine, over 20 grams of suspected crystal meth, over $2,000 in Canadian currency, pre-paid Visa cards, MasterCards and various gift cards (value of over $1,800), a ledger book, a cell phone and digital scales. The value of the drugs seized is believed to be approximately $20,500.  

As a result of the investigation, Dallas Yorko, 42 years of age from Espanola, was charged with: 

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - other drugs, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs Substances Act (CDSA) (two counts); 
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA; 
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); and with 
  • Failure to comply with release order-  other than to attend court, contrary to section 145(5) of the CC.   

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Espanola on Jan. 21, 2021 and was remanded into custody.  

Shawn Bowles, 45 years of age from Espanola, was charged with: 

  • Possession of a schedule I substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA; 
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - other drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA; and with
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC.   

The accused was served a Summons and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on March 1, 2021.  

Jennifer Briffett, 38 years of age from Espanola, was charged with: 

  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 354(1) of the CC.
