ESPANOLA, ON - Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to advise the public that the 2020 Canada Road Safety Week Initiative begins today, Tuesday, May 12, 2020, and will end on Monday, May 18, 2020.

The OPP's focus is the "Big Four" which includes:

  • Impaired driving
  • Seat belt compliance
  • Aggressive driving
  • Distracted driving.

Whether you're operating a car, a boat or an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), all drivers need take charge of their own safety to ensure the safety of their passengers and anyone else whose lives they would jeopardize due to unsafe driving over the weekend.

Officers would also like to remind boaters that most drownings happen unexpectedly when small boats capsize or someone falls overboard. Use of an approved lifejacket or PFD (Personal Flotation Device) is well documented to dramatically increase your chances of surviving a boating incident. Please remain diligent in the cold weather and water.

A safe week and weekend is a fun week and weekend.
