One dead after canoe capsizes near Sagamok Point

WATERS OF LAKE HURON - On the 4th day of August, 2019 at approximately 8 p.m., members with the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), with the assistance of the Anishinabek Police Service (APS) and the Algoma Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a report of a capsized canoe on the waters of the North Channel near Sagamok First Nation.

The investigation has since revealed that two persons were fishing in a canoe near Sagamok Point. The canoe capsized and the persons entered the water. One male was able to make it to shore safely and notify emergency services. With the assistance of civilians nearby, the second person was located without vital signs and lifesaving efforts were commenced by EMS.

Forty-eight-year-old Yvon Toulouse from Sagamok First Nation, Ont. was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Neither persons in the canoe were wearing life jackets at the time the canoe capsized.

The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-FPS).
