Officers threatened with chainsaw after responding to 911 call

BALDWIN TOWNSHIP - On May 9, 2020, officers from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a 9-1-1 call in Baldwin Township.

Officers attended the residence where they were confronted and threatened by a person with a chainsaw. OPP members under the direction of the Critical Incident Commander (CIC) of the OPP and with the assistance of the North East Region OPP Crime Unit, the OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), The North East Region OPP Canine Unit (K9), the North East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), the OPP Crisis Negotiator (CN), the Sudbury-Manitoulin Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and the Baldwin Township Fire Department, a person was arrested without incident.

As a result of the investigation, Shane Yaw, 42 years old, from Baldwin Township was arrested and charged with:
    •    Assault a peace officer with a weapon, contrary to section 270.01(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
    •    Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC; and
    •    Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court on May 11, 2020.
