Traffic stop leads to charges

The officer determined that the licence plate had expired was able to confirm that the driver was operating the motor vehicle without insurance

ESPANOLA - On Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018 at approximately 1:50 p.m., an officer from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was patrolling Highway 17 in Baldwin Township, Ont.

The officer conducted a traffic stop on a passenger car and determined that the licence plate had expired. Furthermore, the officer was able to confirm that the driver was operating the motor vehicle without insurance.

 As a result of the investigation, Shirley Harris, age 35, of Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, Ont., has been charged with:

  • Owner operate a motor vehicle on a highway, no insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Canadian Automobile Insurance Act; and with
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit, contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Provincial Court of Justice in Espanola on March 18, 2018.
