No headlights, stinky pot lead to charges for driver

On Nov. 26, 2017, at 11:33 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties on Highway 17 (Causley Street) in the town of Blind River.

Police observed an east bound motor vehicle travelling with no headlights or tail lights illuminated. A subsequent traffic stop was conducted. Officers detected a strong odour of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. After investigation, the driver was arrested and vehicle searched.

The search of the vehicle revealed drug related paraphernalia, marijuana, numerous cell phones, and approximately $33,650 in cash.   

Members from the Northeast Region Provincial Asset Forfeiture Unit (PAFU), East Algoma Crime Unit and uniform members were involved with the investigation.

Oronde Nicosi Gordon, 23 years of age, of Niagara Falls, Ont., was charged with:

  • Possession of schedule II substance - cannabis marijuana, under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime - over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River, Ont. on Feb. 1, 2018.
