Man accused of theft in three separate incidents

He faces drug possession and trafficking stolen goods charges as a result of the incidents

On Oct. 28, 2019, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a theft occurrence from the hospital on Spine Road, in the City Elliot Lake, Ont.

The complainant reported that an employee's backpack was stolen from the facility. The theft occurred at approximately 12:20 a.m. on Oct. 26, 2019 and was captured on camera. 

The video showed a suspect entering the hospital and going to the security officer area. The suspect then proceeded to steal the backpack and leave the hospital. Police reviewed the video and later identified the suspect.    

The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged on Nov. 15, 2019.

Kurtis Letts, 29 years of age, of no fixed address was charged with:

  • Theft under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Fail to comply with probation order (three counts), contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC,
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA).

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake, Ont. on Jan. 7, 2020.

On Nov. 9, 2019, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a theft occurrence at a residence on Mississauga Avenue in the City of Elliot Lake, Ont. 

The complainant reported that a 42" flat screen television was stolen sometime overnight. The complainant had a known suspect in mind who was staying at the residence. On Nov. 10, 2019, the OPP received a separate call on Beckett Boulevard in regards to a known person selling them a television that they thought might be stolen. 

After investigation, police confirmed that it was the same television. Police were also able to confirm the identity of the suspect. The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged on Nov. 15, 2019.

Kurtis Letts, 29 years of age, of no fixed address was charged with:

  • Theft under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC,
  • Trafficking in property obtained by crime, contrary to section 355.2 of the CC.
