Local driver charged with impaired

On March 10, 2018 at 10:07 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members received a call of a motor vehicle being driven by a male who was possibly impaired on Mississauga Avenue in the City of Elliot Lake, Ont.

A vehicle description and plate number was provided. Police attended the area and located the vehicle parked in a driveway on Axmith Avenue. The vehicle was still running, lights were on and a male was sitting in the driver's seat. A strong odour of alcoholic beverage was detected emanating from his breath. He was subsequently arrested and his driver's licence suspended.

Shannon Melis, 47 years of age from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Care or control while impaired (alcohol), contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Fail or refuse to provide sample, contrary to section 254(3) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on April 10, 2018.

The OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive. Report impaired drivers. Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.
