Impaired charges laid after motorcycle crashes into ditch in Blind River

BLIND RIVER - On June 19, 2020, shortly after 6:00 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Algoma District Paramedic Services responded to a single motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle with two occupants that entered a ditch on Granary Lake Road in the Town of Blind River.     

Investigation determined, the motorcycle was northbound on Granary Lake Road when the driver lost control and entered the east side ditch. The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, and the passenger received non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of the investigation, Ryan Free, age 48, of Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC; and with
  • Driver-no helmet or improper helmet, contrary to section 19(1) Highway Traffic Act Ontario Regulations 316.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on July 16, 2020.
