Gas station attendant allegedly threatened with knife. Elliot Lake man charged

On Aug. 28, 2018 at approximately 12:55 a.m., members from the East Algoma Elliot Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a robbery at a gas station on Highway 108 in the City of Elliot Lake, Ont.

A pick-up truck attended the gas station and a male entered the building. The male threatened the attendant with a knife and demanded money, cigarettes, and lottery tickets. Police were on scene moments later.

Later that same day at approximately 6:34 p.m., police responded to a theft of gas at a gas station on Hillside Drive South. A vehicle description and license plate number were provided to police.

After investigation, it was learned the same vehicle was used at both gas stations. On Aug. 29, 2018, the male (suspect) was subsequently arrested and charged.

The OPP East Algoma Crime Unit and Greater Sudbury Police Service assisted with the investigation.

Alex Ethier, 25 years of age of Elliot Lake, Ont. was charged with:
    •    Robbery with weapon, contrary to section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
    •    Uttering threats - cause death of bodily harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC,
    •    Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC, and
    •    Theft under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River, Ont. on Aug. 30, 2018.
