Espanola traffic stop leads to drug charges

Police found suspected marijuana and cocaine

ESPANOLA - On Saturday, March 16, 2019, an officer from the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting traffic enforcement on Centre Street, in the Town of Espanola, Ont.

At approximately 2:03 p.m., the officer observed a violation and conducted a traffic stop. Police seized a quantity of suspected marijuana and suspected cocaine.

As a result of the investigation two men have been charged, 29-year-old Brayden Rajotte from Espanola, Ont. has been charged with:
    •    Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and
    •    Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act, 2017.

He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, Ont. on May 9, 2019.

Stephen Scoular, a 21-year-old male from Espanola, Ont. has been charged with:
    •    Passenger - fail to properly wear seat belt, contrary to section 106(3)(b) of the HTA; and
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, Ont. on May 6, 2019.

The OPP is reminding drivers that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving.
