Erratic driver charged with impaired

On Aug. 18, 2017 at 3:22 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members received a call of a motor vehicle that almost caused a head-on collision on Highway 17 near Highway 108.

Police observed the vehicle operating in an erratic manner on Highway 108 and conducted a subsequent traffic stop. Upon speaking to the male driver, a strong odour of alcohol was detected emanating from his breath. 

As a result, the male was arrested, driver's license suspended, and the vehicle was towed and impounded.

George Halliday, 71 years of age from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Fail or refuse to provide breath sample, contrary to section 254(3) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Fail to stop on right for emergency vehicle, contrary to section 159(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Drive motor vehicle in contravention of conditions, contrary to section 32(9) of the  (HTA)
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor License Act (LLA)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Oct. 31, 2017.
