The emergency department at Elliot Lake's St. Joseph's General Hospital has re-opened following a violent incident that forced it's closure late Friday morning.

It's reported a person went on a rampage in emergency damaging equipment and fixtures before being subdued.

Damage was so extensive the department had to be shut down Friday afternoon and hospital CEO Pierre Ozolins announced that an ambulance bypass was put in place at that time, meaning EMS vehicles took local patients from Elliot Lake to the hospital in Blind River instead.

He said there had been an incident in emergency, but fortunately there were no injuries.

Hospital officials tell ElliotLakeToday that after hours of restoration and cleanup work, the emergency department has been reopened and services have been fully restored.

East Algoma OPP Constable Phil Young told ElliotLakeToday police were called to the hospital in response to the incident and are investigating.
