Elliot Lake man, 83, accused of trying to kill a raccoon with a pitch fork

Police say a neighbour called in a complaint when they heard screaming

On Sept. 12, 2019, at approximately 11:00 a.m. members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for service on Mississauga Avenue in the City of Elliot Lake, Ontario.

The complainant reported that they heard screaming coming from her neighbour's backyard. When they looked to see what was going on, they [allegedly] observed their neighbour trying to kill a racoon in a trap with a pitch fork and a pail of water. 

After investigation, police arrested and charged the male.   

Leslie (Les) Harper, 83 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Cruelty to animals - Unnecessary pain, suffering or injury, contrary to section 445.1(1)(a)of the Criminal Code (CC).

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court in Elliot Lake, Ontario on Oct. 29, 2019.
