Drug possession and driving without insurance charges laid in two separate traffic stops

TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE - On Jan. 4, 2018, shortly after 12:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment were on patrol duties on Highway 17 in the Village of Serpent River within the Township of the North Shore.

Police observed an eastbound vehicle travelling on Highway 17 and initiated a traffic stop. As the officer approached the vehicle he could detect an odour of raw cannabis marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The male passenger who was the owner of the vehicle was arrested.

As a result of the investigation, Shane Stadey, 27 years of age from Thunder Bay, Ont. was charged with: Possession of a Scheduled II Substance-Cannabis Marijuana-Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Mar. 1, 2018.

TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE - On Jan. 4, 2018, shortly after 8:30 a.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment were on patrol duties on Highway 17 in the Village of Serpent River within the Township of the North Shore.

Shortly after 11 a.m., police observed a westbound vehicle travelling a high rate of speed and a traffic stop was initiated. The driver did not have insurance for his vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, Aubrey Borenstein, 21 years of age from Toronto, Ont. was charged with:

  • Operate Motor Vehicle-No Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act; and with
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Feb. 21, 2018.
