Driver with multiple licenses charged for driving without a license

Both the driver and passenger face several charges

ESPANOLA – On May 13, 2020, just before 8:30 p.m. members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Hwy 6, in the Town of Espanola.

As a result, the OPP have charged a 33-year-old driver from Wikwemikong First Nation with:    

  • Operate Unsafe Vehicle, contrary to section 84 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA),  
  • Possess more than one licence, contrary to section 35(1)(e) of the HTA; and 
  • Drive motor vehicle - no licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the HTA.

The vehicle was parked off the roadway and the driver was released by way of summons and is scheduled to appear at the Provincial Court of Justice in Espanola in July 2020.   

The passenger, had provided a false name to police and was on conditions not to be around the driver, stemming from a previous domestic related incident.

The OPP also charged the 37-year-old passenger, from Wikwemikong First Nation with:  

  • Obstruct Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

The accused was released on an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola in July 2020.

The OPP will not be releasing the names in order to protect the identity of the victim.
