Driver facing numerous charges after traffic stop in Espanola

Among the charges was operating a vehicle without insurance

On Sept. 25, 2020, at approximately 7:53 p.m. members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting traffic enforcement on Spruce Street in Espanola. 

 A vehicle was stopped for a Highway Traffic Act (HTA) violation and the driver was found to be suspended and prohibited criminally from driving a motor vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, the driver Bo Derek Larabie, 29 years old, of Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation was arrested and charged with:   

  • Operation while prohibited - legal restriction from any other act of parliament or provincial law contrary to section 320.18(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the HTA;
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the HTA; and
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA).

The accused was released on an Appearance Notice and also on several Provincial Summonses. They are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Nov. 30, 2020 in Espanola.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for 45 days.
