Driver charged with speeding, impaired

BLIND RIVER - On Jan. 6, 2019, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on Patrol on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly before 8 p.m., police observed an eastbound vehicle on Causley Street travelling at a high rate of speed. The officer then observed the vehicle turn northbound on Queen Street and then pulled into a parking lot on Leacock Street.

The officer exited his cruiser where he approached the male driver. As the officer was speaking to the driver, the officer determined the driver had consumed alcohol. The driver was arrested and transported to Blind River detachment where the male provided two breath samples of over 200 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.

As a result of the investigation, David Calder, 29 years of age from Blind River, Ont. was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration - 80 plus, contrary to section 320.14 (1) (b) of the Criminal Code; and with
    •    Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Jan. 31, 2019.
