Driver charged after police respond to speeding complaint

On Oct. 22, 2017, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a westbound vehicle travelling at high rates of speed and driving erratically on Highway 17 through the Towns of Massey and Spanish.

An East Algoma officer observed the westbound vehicle travelling at high rates of speed through the Town of Blind River continuing westbound towards Mississauga First where a traffic stop was initiated. The driver's licence was seized and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

As a result of the investigation, Jason Richard, 45 years of age from Tofino, B.C. was charged with drive motor vehicle-perform stunt-speeding by 50 or more km/hr, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Dec. 20, 2017.
