BLIND RIVER - On May 5, 2020 at approximately 2:55 p.m., members from the East Algoma Blind River Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a possible domestic dispute that was occurring at an apartment complex on West Street in the Town of Blind River.

Police determined on the evening of May 4, 2020, the complainant/victim was struck in the back with a cell phone. On this date of May 5, 2020, the victim was struck multiple times in the face with a closed fist, and was suffocated and choked. The accused was on conditions not to attend or communicate with the victim from a previous domestic.

As a result of the investigation, a 45-year-old from Elliot Lake was charged with:
    •    Forcible confinement, contrary to section 279(2) of the Criminal Code (CC),
    •    Assault bodily harm - choke, suffocate or strangle, contrary to section 267(c) of the CC,
    •    Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the CC, and with
    •    Fail to comply with conditions of undertaking given by officer in charge, contrary to section 145(5.1) of the CC

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on May 6, 2020.
