Crash leads to impaired driving charges on Manitoulin Island

Driver had walked away from the crash scene and was located by officers on the ice, police say

LITTLE CURRENT - On Nov. 18, 2022 at approximately 6:20 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single vehicle in the ditch on Highway 6 in the town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands.

The complainant reported the driver had walked away from the vehicle and police located them on the ice. Once in a place of safety, it was determined the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages. They were subsequently arrested and returned to detachment for further tests.

David Williamson, 52 years old from New Hamburg, was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Dec. 14, 2022.
