Complaints lead to arrest on Manitoulin Island

MANITOULIN ISLAND –  Police made an arrest on Wednesday after several calls from the public about incidents in a township in eastern Manitoulin Island.

On May 31 shortly before the noon hour, the Manitoulin Detachment of the OPP says it received several calls regarding a male who had committed several criminal offences throughout Assiginack Township.

With the assistance of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service, the suspect was quickly located and arrested, the OPP said in a news release.

Following an investigation, Darren Machimity, 38, from Wikwemikong First Nation was charged with:

  • Assault
  • Mischief under $5,000 - two counts
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Dangerous operation
  • Driving while under suspension

The accused appeared before the Sudbury Bail Court and was remanded back into custody, and was scheduled to appear before the Sudbury Bail Court on June 2.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
