Assault charges follow incident in Spanish

An incident at an apartment complex led to a pair of charges for a man from Spanish

SPANISH - On Dec. 13, 2017, shortly after 9 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment responded to a domestic disturbance at residence on Hamilton Street in the Town of Spanish.

Investigation determined that a couple had just recently been dating and lived in separate apartments at a complex on Hamilton Street. The female's adult son was visiting her. 

He left his mother's apartment to go home. As he was walking down the hall he ran into an intoxicated male who was dating his mother. An argument ensued in the hallway and escalated to where son was physically assaulted by the boyfriend. 

A short time later the son went to check on his mother's wellbeing. As the son neared her apartment he observed his mother being pulled into the boyfriend's apartment where she was physically assaulted.

The male was arrested and lodged overnight at East Algoma Detachment in Blind River. The male was released on a Promise to Appear and Undertaking the next morning.

As a result of the investigation, a 54-year-old male from Spanish, Ontario was charged with:

  • Assault-Spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Jan. 4, 2017.
